Well, we've all made a simple mistake like that at some point. And it's rare that it doesn't come back to bite you.

Ah yes, the failed Intelligence/Wisdom Check (or whatever a particular system uses refers to it). I am aware the strip addresses Diplomacy but if you've played an RPG long enough, you get to the point where you realize

"The non-player character the GM took the trouble to introduce me to simply walked off after a few words after I talked a bunch of crap. So either I missed something good happening or triggered something bad because why would the GM throw a random, made-up-on-the-spot character at me right then?"

Yes, the GM counter-revelation is that from time to time you have to risk making up characters on the spot to keep the PCs from realizing that any NPC encounter they don't force probably is indeed quite relevant, but that you can't do it all the time because improving too much increases the risk of you (the GM) messing something up. =P

What is fun is that some systems actually have a mechanic to help players out that want to avoid doing really stupid things. In GURPS it is called Common Sense and costs 10 points. Some GMs mandate new players take it so that the GM rolls against the characters IQ whenever he would do something STUPID (...the emphasis is from the original text), and if it succeeds the GM will ask the player if he or she wants to reconsider the action.
