GM's aren't that different from players. They want to hurt the most number of things in the most interesting way possible.

Those GM's can be a bad thing. a friend of mine said it perfectly
"I don't want to kill your characters. I want to see you all succeed and move on. The WORLD wants you dead, or at the least the bad guys in it. My job just happens to be playing the bad guys."

Yeah, the "want you to suffer" GMs aren't fun. Well, at least from my point of view. I think I've got a rather thin skin for that sort of thing.

Depends on the style. I tend toward evil asshole DM, myself, but I am pleased when players rise to my challenges. Example: Oh, hey, you're level four now! Have a mummy to fight!

And they did. And kicked its ass through clever tactics. They covered the tank with armor enchanted with cure moderate wounds. Well, mummies are very, very simple minded. The tank did the most damage, so he received the mummy's ire. Mummy tried to grab him, was repulsed by the damaging healing spell.

They locked the mummy in a behavior loop and used terrain to trap it. Then they rained death upon it in the form of arrows, bricks, and spells. In eight rounds the mummy was cornered and annihilated. By a group of five level four characters.

I always give them a challenge when I DM, but I never say stuff like "Okay, you are now surrounded by rust dragons. All your gear is ruined."

Well, Raxon, having simple-minded enemies focus on the tanks is kinda evidence AGAINST being a killer GM.
A real 'I want the players to lose' GM would forego tough monsters in favor of some way to dump raw damage on the weakest members of the party - like monsters tumbling past the fighters to one-shot the mages, or whatever.

Fair enough, but I like to throw enemies above their level at them. Things that the rules say should curbstomp them, and then they bitchslap the bad things through very creative tactics.

Oh what I wouldn't give to be a part of a game session GMed by you.
