Woo! Here comes the Chuunin Exam Arc, one of, if not the, best story arcs in the series. Man I can't wait!

Now for a bit of speculation about what will be done for the other Teams in this comic. So far my four main theories are:

1. They will be run as NPCs. This is honestly the most likely option, and it makes a lot of sense to do it this way. My only complaint with it is that it feels like a bit of a missed opportunity to me if it were done this way. I'll explain why in a bit.

2. They will be guest players running either pre-made or custom made characters. This is easily the least likely scenario to occur, because realistically no one even remotely sane would try to run a game with so many players at once unless it's a once-off or they're absurdly confident.

3. The Teams will have one guest player each (e.g. one guy playing Shikamaru), who will either control just one character or the whole team, depending on the situation. This is my personal favorite option, mostly because I feel that it might be more fun or meaningful to have characters who have a (mildly) important role in the original series be played by other players as opposed to just being NPCs. Though if Rex does go for the NPC option and does it well, I won't be complaining.

4. The teams may be run by the players at one point or another (e.g. Naruto could run Kiba, or Sasuke could run Gaara). I doubt this will be the case, as I can't think of a reason why they would do that, I'm just throwing that out there.

While highly unlikely, I can give some plausible (if improbable) reasons for it, because I've experienced some.

A) It can be a way for the GM and players to get a little diversity without actually having to restart the campaign. Potentially a good role-playing and strategy exercise as well.

B)The GM is having a hard time fleshing out significant NPCs. Bringing the players in lets them shape and get to know these NPCs. Whether they are allies or enemies, sometimes the PCs and NPCs are supposed to have a history, even a deep history together. Especially in a setting with rapid character advancement or at least enough of a break for characters to plausibly develop, you get the intrigue of a character you may know well, but not completely.

C) Spare characters when you're less worried about the "game" and more worried about the "story". Some groups (and even games) don't make you start over from scratch if your character dies, or even allows you a stable of characters from which to pick.
C)Whether because the GM didn't realize, didn't care, or because new players didn't show, there is an adventure coming that calls for a lot more players. Or like the previous point, the group just enjoys having extra characters for each player to use.

D) Doesn't apply here, but especially if players do a good job handling multiple PCs, then something else that happened with one of my groups was two separate campaigns merged, and players that had a character from the old campaign got to play both it and their new, current one.

5. Kakashi runs the teams from character sheets given by the GM

I can see that happening; maybe the guy just can't decide which character to run. He might also be groomed to start functioning as an "adversary" for some games.
