There's a key difference between, "This is the King's advisor whom you're just now meeting" and, "You went to high school with this guy and took his sister to prom."

I'm not sure what the etiquette is in this sort of situation. Your comments won't affect my plan for tackling this, but I am honestly curious about this one. Probably more than ever before.

There's a world of difference between the GM telling you things your character did and the GM giving you something that had to have happened somehow and letting you figure out how it ties in. It works out pretty well if you don't define every aspect of your character in the first place, and adapting that kind of thing into what you already have can be fun.

My personal pet theories:

Team Asuma
Jarrod made Shikamaru as his first extra character, He skimped on the backstory since he's not in any way related to the Uhiha storyline he's planning on but Maxed out INT and took shadow powers just incase he'd ever be stuck playing him.

Kathy Made Chouji, She gave him endless gluttony since she doesn't really know how to act like a guy, the actual useful parts of the build were added on later by the GM.

Mal made Ino, pretty much a parody of what he sees Sakura's build as, Obsessed with Sasuke, below average useful stats and mind control just to troll his party members.

Team Kurenai
this team was made second after everybody is mad at each other from seeing team Asuma

Jarrod makes Hinata, obsessed with Naruto but can't talk in complete sentences seems like a fitting revenge character for Ino

Kathy makes Kiba also as revenge for Ino, a lamer naruto knockoff with animal undertones.

Mal makes Shino simply to abuse the swarm rules, he has no idea what the other two are planning.

"These guys will be your backup characters in case you die so you can help me build the but if they suck you might be stuck with them forever"

Indeed. That and should our GM get an itch for some huge battle but the group is still only three people... everyone gets their own party. XD

Like always, its a fine balance. If he players didnt writ a elaborated background (especially if you asked for it), you dont have to feel guilty for writing the blanks.

But most of the time, sure, you have to ask the players how they feel about it and what kind of NPCs they would like to have in their backstory. Communication is always the key. Some players dont mind being surprised and go with the flow. But yeah, the majority would probably not.

Can you tone down Cathy's rivalry with Ino, or at least not make it about Sasuke?

Would make sense if Mal made Ino's character though, what a way to tease his sister.

Have... have I indicated that Sakura has a crush on Sasuke? Because if I did, it was an accident.
Foolish 4th Jul 2016, 7:19 PM edit delete reply
Well no, I was just worried because, Sakura...Kishimoto...the usual.

The point is not if Sakura actually has a crush on Sasuke, the point is if Mal thinks he'd embarass his sister by IMPLYING a crush, even when non existed before.
