Anyone here has any impostor stories?
Otaku 14th Nov 2016, 12:25 PM edit delete reply
Sort of.

While in college, I had to miss a lot of my groups sessions. So the GM allowed me to come back and play the Adversary for a session. I had an NPC villain I'd been working on for my own (by then aborted) campaign, and the GM let me tweak him for this setting instead.

One of his tricks was shape shifting, so it didn't matter that everyone knew what this character looked like normally - instead I just looked like the new PC adventurer ready to join the party. I even was able to entice another player's PC into some romantic alone time. After a nice, quiet walk to a secluded garden, we embraced and went for a kiss and...

...I was that close to racking up a PC kill. You see, my shapeshifter had purchased his individual fingers, toes, and tongue as impaling strikers, and he also had stretching powers (shapeshifter and all). The only reason the PC survived was because she was indebted to a genie or demigod or the like that was spying on her, it saw what was about to happen, and it stopped me from tongue stabbing her.

This is why you should occasionally just scribble on a piece of paper and hand it to players at random intervals

Not randomly. Do it when it will spread the most chaos. And when the party is split, I like having note conversations about a movie with the least trustworthy character.

Now, see, Jarrod had an easy out to being accused of blatant metagaming. Not an out on all the metagaming, but still. It's a case of "We're in a forest full of ninjas, of course I'd be suspicious! Be dumb not to be!"
It's still some metagame, but at least sells it in character somewhat too.

Aye; for the setting the only issue is that the attack happened before the roll. Except even that is legit because it is totally in character for Sasuke (even as he is portrayed here) to jump the gun a little (but be fortunate to have been correct).

In most adventuring settings, at worst an Intelligence or Wisdom (or whatever the system's relevant stat) roll should be allowed for the characters to realize what might be happening.

In some systems, not even that. GURPS has Perks, which are as minor of Advantages as you can buy in the system as they cost a single character point. One is called "Standard Operating Procedure" and it is just like it sounds. It cannot be too complex, but basically you name a useful standard operating procedure for your character and both you and the GM know your character follows it. Stuff like always reloading weapons or refueling vehicles between fights, always making sure to lock up if you're the last one out of a building or vehicle, etc.

This is why I prefer playing over Skype and maptool,or if we do it in person, I email the group regularly from my lap top to hide actual hidden messages.

GM sounds like he's sad the idea didn't pan out for longer.

In this re-read of... well, the Chunnin Exams in general I noticed this again and man how did I not notice that the Rain guys are hardcore religious, because of Pein and his god complex! Oh, best foreshadowing.
