I don't know how it works in D&D, but in other systems (like GURPS) you can basically interrupt the normal turn order by taking such a maneuver.

D&D has two options: Delaying a turn or Readying an Action.

Delaying a Turn just changes your initiative order for your entire turn, placing it later in the round.

Readying a Turn takes a single action and allows you to use it when triggered by a specific circumstance off-turn. For instance, you could Ready an Attack action to stab a charging enemy with a kunai when they are in reach of your melee attack. In some versions of D&D, this also changes your initiative permanently.

Okay, makes sense; same way it works in the other gaming systems I've used, except of course with different terminology. ;)
