And then there was the time Lee punched into the ground and broke it open. You'd think that we'd remember that more.

The problem is, when we think of Lee, we automatically think "bowl cut" or "punchline" or "slightly more subtle than naruto" and not someone who's actually pretty kickass at what he does.

I think taught garra about pain

Garra knew pain, but thought himself invunerable.
Lee told him that he was lying to himself.

The problem is that no one but Kishimoto can ever seem to write a version of Lee that isn't an exaggerated parody of himself, and Lee just doesn't get that much screen time, canonically. Not past the time skip, anyway.

In all fairness, Lee is a parody unto himself of 'youth' obsessive lively earnest guys. One who through character development proved himself to be leaps and bounds beyond merely the parody. I never forget how awesome Lee is. As what I always remember is not just the bowl cut, but those large round eyes and expressive eyebrows coupled with a proud grin of a man who refuses to give in! Youth!!!!

... Why does lee have a squirrel riding on him at the start? I don't recall lee having animal sidekicks lol.

In story, it was a squirrel that Lee had saved when he spotted that it had a paper bomb on it, and it led him to Sakura (I think? I don't really know). I don't know if RandomRex6 will address it though.
