I like that you and I cut the unnecessary crying from our team healers and edit around making them more badass. Good call, Cathy seems like she's not saying Sakura's "Maybe we shouldn't do this" and more of "Don't mess this up you two!"

What series do you do DeadpanSal?
DeadpanSal 14th Aug 2017, 3:55 PM edit delete reply
D&D Aangvanced, which has Katara who cries twice an episode. Katara and Sakura are pretty much the same character. They cry and heal their stronger allies.

I must have watched a different Avatar then you. I watched the one where she almost became Darth Katara

You sure it wasn't the same one? Lots of blue people, terrible script?

I have yet to watch Dances With Space Wolves.

No the Avatar I'm thinking of is the one where Katara goes on a crusade to avenge her dead mother, bloodbends despite declaring she never would, and then nearly kills said murderer. The only thing that stops Katara isn't morals, but seing how pathetic said murder is. THAT is the Avatar I am thinking of.

I can't disagree that she was powerful. But maybe the feminist stance would have been stronger if her defining characteristics hadn't been "The emotional one" and "Team Healer/Mom". But I could write an essay on this and probably shouldn't do it on Rex's wall.

Wasn't aware those were nessecarilly bad traits, but ok.

On a related note, have you seen SFDebris reviews of the series.

Speaking of which, don't forget that the team mom aspect DID keep them all alive in the desert.

I guess what I'm trying to say is, and correct me if I'm wrong, is that you think woman can't be BOTH feminine and badass. It's like you seem to think one trait takes away from the other. Maybe I am misunderstanding you but that's the impression that I get.

I don't think they're bad on their own, but they have an unfortunate implication that I can't think of positively when written onto a female character through the pen of a male writer. Katara is a lone example in the show of what I think are phenomenally written characters. If you liked Katara, I'm not trying to convince you she's a bad character. I just think that Sakura and Katara are too similar and have traits given to them by male writers that I will never feel comfortable with.

I know this is unlikely, but if there was an artist who'd be willing to redraw the Sakura v Ino fight for free, that'd be awesome. Cathy's last stand folks!
