Tournaments are common in Shonen. It's an easy way to get a lot of fights quickly. By contrast, I don't know that it happens quite as often in RPGs. But I think that it happens at conventions...

Have I mentioned I don't know RPGs that well?

One-on-one tournaments in RPGs are generally a bad idea. It leaves a lot of down-time for the people who aren't playing, and if there's a bracket and everything goes well for the PCs then the PvP can cause hurt feelings.

Tournaments where the team fights other teams, that's much better, since the entire team is constantly active, there's a strong sense of accomplishment and clear rewards as you progress, and it helps the team build its teamwork skills. There doesn't even have to be that great of a prize at the end, since a lot of players would join a tournament like that just for the sanctioned chance to smack heads together and show off for a crowd.

Maybe have the players also play for the NPC's they helped design?
Of course that brings up a new question, what do you when two of the NPC's you designed get slotted against each other, for example Negi vs Hinata. Or in the case of Cathy she designed all of team 10 which is currently being played by her boyfriend Shawn, however of all four characters Shikamaru is the only one to advance to the next round. What does that mean, in story, for Cathy's and Shawn's character's?
