In the first Viz translation it was called 'Art of the Valentine'. That... has some weird implications. But anyone trying to use mind control for good is standing in a weird moral area.

Cathy, Sakura wearing the short hair better than Ino is like bragging you're thinner than the fat guy, taller than the short guy, etc. ;) Which means Rex is writing the character correctly; that sounds like Sakura in Naruto and not just this strip. XD

As for the mind control aspect, technically isn't it body control in this case? Yes, really, there is a difference. Still, something that is hard to justify for the "heroes", but it seems less problematic than invading the sanctity of one's mind and manipulating it.

Keep in mind that they ARE ninja

I know the show tends to forget this, but historically ninja were not seen as honorable fighters, so using an underhanded tactic like "body/mind control" is perfectly within their means, even if they are the "good guy"

They are less "ninja" than "ninja-flavored shounen protagonists". Kind of like how Luffy over in One Piece rarely engages in actual piracy and is mostly a high-seas adventurer.

Same reason I let myself complain about the hair; for "real" ninja, long hair would be a no-no due to the combat aspect. If an infiltration mission required, you either go with a wig/extensions or enough time to grow it out just in the mission prep stage.

Plus, the initial question was phrased in a broad manner. I know I always thought it seemed like Jedi and Sith have the opposite "power"; hurling lightning bolts can really go either way, but influencing the weak-willed seems like more of a Darkside thing... but instead its the Jedi's trick (or shared by them).

They can always use henge no jutsu to get a more practical hair style for the mission

I was bringing up practical disguise decisions for fringe cases, mostly. ;) Like long-term infiltration where you can't get by using that jutsu, whether because it eats up too much chakra or means you must deal with countermeasures. I can't base it on anything solid, but in RPG terms, I suspect there's a penalty to your skills (or at least using other jutsu) the more you have actively going.

Even if I am wrong about all of those... when you want to look "kewl" while hanging out in your home village, just cheat and use the Transformation Technique, and drop it when the serious business starts. XP Might actually catch your opponent's off guard...

If you have a side with mind control diametrically opposed to a side without mind control, the side with mind control will inevitably come to be known as the "good" guys by history since anyone who disagrees with their doctrine can be "convinced" to "change their minds".

If the side with Mind Control wins or technically loses but heavily infiltrates the other side... yeah.

It is like treason:

Treason doth never prosper: what's the reason?
Why, if it prosper, none dare call it treason.
