It's nice to have goals. If a player doesn't have a clear endgame beyond the next adventure, try dangling one in front of them.

Hmm, you know, I don't think this comic's had one of these yet, so if it is, then I have the proud honour of introducing a good campaign comic tradition... STORY TIME! Tell a story about a time when a random conversation during your game gave you or another player's character an end-game goal that they didn't have before.

By the way, yes, I've seen other people post stories here already (as they should) but I just wanted to see if I could call for the first story time here :)

I had a variation of where my joking around led to me making a goal, completing that goal, and then have it rip to shreds by the GM and my fellow players when I missed a game. Don't worry. If I was there, I was gonna tear to it to shreds as well.

Basically, we were playing a game where we were Marvel Superheroes. Specifically the Avengers. I was Moon Knight (Think Batman with MPD or whatever the term is now a days) and I was a sort of member of the Avengers. The guy playing Tony Stark refused to officially let me join because a bunch of psycho superheroes (Read Deadpool, NPC, and an OC played by one of the players) caused Fisk Towers to collapse. With the other Avengers in it. And a whole bunch of innocent people saved for one dying. And Kingpin escaped. But we killed Shocker, Doc Ock, and Venom in the process.

So anyway, this lead to Civil War. Except worse because every superhero was banned and hunted down. Now comes the joking down leading to an actual goal. I started calling us the Secret Avengers because we were now on the lam. Everyone refused to accept the name (Read, everyone didn't care except for the guy playing Iron Man who didn't like it. Note, he wasn't being a jerk, just thought that Tony wouldn't like the name). Eventually, as I was getting screwed over as MK, I decided to that Moon Knight would quit the team and try to form his own Avengers team and he will call it Secret Avengers. And then I started playing as Hercules.

You might think that was the end and MK became an NPC. No, the system we were using allows multiple characters depending on GM discretion and how much XP you were willing to pay. So while I was playing as Hercules with the Avengers, I would switch every now and then to MK to form the SA. Starting with Deadpool. Eventually, I dragged the Punisher, who was missing a jaw thanks to DP before I joined, into it thanks to the multiple character rule. And then we got Psylocke into it because the GM had DP bring her in. Soon, I was forming the SA and life was great! My goal was complete!

Then I ruined it by having Punisher go kill a bunch of mutants (who were evil) because Sabertooth tried to kill him. It was revenge filled with collateral damage and it lead to the Avengers kidnapping Punisher and learning everything about SA. How? Telepathy. Damn overpowered telepathy. So, I had a choice to make. I decided to fire as Punisher as Psylocke abandoned me and Deadpool. And then things happened, I barely remembered, and soon MK and DP decided screw it and attacked Avengers Tower (Also by this point the Avengers were no longer fugitives). It was gonna be them versus Iron Man, drunken Gambit (The guy who was playing as that psycho OC that destroyed Fisk Towers? Same player for Gambit) and Spider-Man (Played by me. The dice really hated me)

Secret Avengers vs Avengers! And I missed the session where the epic battle happened. So I only learned the next day that MK and DP lost. And all was right with the world.
