There was a 3.5 book with the ideas that became 4th edition powers and they were really cool. So I built a soulless samurai with the best ones. He became the table's favorite character, despite the fact that the NPC was the bad guy's bodyguard. And he had an ability that let his AC raise every time he missed (+1 stacking). So when everyone paired off in fights against the final battle, the monk went up against him.

It was pretty embarrassing, because all of his Flurry of Blows rolled higher each time, but always 1 or 2 short of the enemy's current Armor Class. In the end, the final boss was defeated and the absolutely neutral samurai was pretty much unscathed.

"I congratulate you on your victory and will now lay down arms. Thank you for the battle."
"Weirdo."

Tome of Battle is a pretty good sourcebook. I know Tome of Magic was intended to be used to test stuff for 4E too but from what I can gather it's not as fun (or powerful). I assume the Samurai was a Warblade?

Yeah, I think that was it! Warblade with a zanpakutou that summoned a dragon of light.

Was the Zanpakutou from another sourcebook?

No, I had the option of taking feats to unlock any weapon made of specific metals with an at will, encounter (shikai) and a daily (bankai). It's sort of a dirty way to do it, but gave me plenty to work with.
