But oh what glory when you can actually overcome it. Assuming your dm is actually just using an overpowered character instead of flat out cheating.

If you ever do this, there needs to be a damn good reason for it to justify the combat. One time I had a ridiculous boss fight with a real bastard who was a great warrior and, oh, he also has the power to control hearts and devastate anyone with crushing emotional turmoil as a supernatural ability tied to his voice.

This went on for a few rounds while I messed with them. And then who should come to their rescue but the table favorite samurai without a soul NPC (and thus immune to the supernatural ability), who cuts the guy's tongue out before dying horribly.

Oh the murder that followed was wonderful!

Sometimes the damn good reason is because you make it clear that this guy is way too powerful for the players to fight, but they try anyway.

The DM is not responsible for suicide. There is no ECL for bad decisions.

In PFS, i once fought a CR 9 or 11 golem at 4th to give the party time to run. i survived for 18 seconds.

Well, it's a pretty good tool to use in situations similar to... this one, where they aren't playing their normal character temporarily.
