The revelations begin to unfold. This is a turning point. Contrary to what you might believe, this is the true call to adventure. Once the scope changes, you have to decide if you're going to face something so far beyond your paygrade.

Though depending on the game system and GM it might not even be that boring. Even a GM that wants to keep the adventure on track can avoid the label of "railroading" by creatively steering you back to the planned adventure. Having multiple options for these "big" choices is better still, but also a lot more work for said GM. XD

Some game systems allow you to study to improve your character and/or work to earn money. As such resisting the plothook might annoy the GM but be fun because your character might not be too far away from a threshold crossing improvement in that manner.

It also helps immersion (and can help a GM) when the players realize sometimes he's going to give them options they should not pursue, or at least wait a bit to follow through on. In real life, there are plenty of times you can do something, but you shouldn't (at least not yet). Balancing the additional time this gives the situation to change versus the time it allows for your own situation to change can really add depth.
