As said, the only downside to taking 20 is lost time. But sometimes, time is of the essence.

So weird one. Story time! Tell a story about when you or someone else specifically chose to not take 20.

I understand taking a 10 in a low-stress situation.
But what is taking a 20?

I believe the general idea is that simply "taking ten" is kinda average, and not guaranteed to succeed. But if nothing is actually fighting against you and all you need is to "try until you make it" then "taking 20" is to just "work at until you succeed" since a 20 is a guaranteed success. But, then again, it also means that "working until you succeed" will take time.

Also, it means making 20 attempts. You spend 20 attempts worth of materials, set off any trap that you would set off on a natural 1, etc.

Taking twenty guarantees a success, but it takes twenty times the amount of time to complete the task.

Sort what has been said, but it's worth noting that taking 20 doses not guarantee success, though if the GM's not a dick person they will tell you it won't work.

It's also worth noting that a natural 20 still tends to out rank it for effectiveness in the moment, though some GMs say that taking 20 is a better character growing experience.

Sort of the difference between hard work working wonders and just getting lucky.
