So... anyone more science-minded than me care to explain how this thing stays afloat at all?

When in doubt, something something chakra.

Something something, the presence of so many ninja leaks enough chakra into the air that it thickens the atmosphere, making the parachute much more effective and explaining why the ninja are all superhuman since they've been training and fighting in super dense air a la tower of god... lol, I dunno.

Lazy as it sounds... yeah. Take something that works IRL, then just handwave everything with chakra making it behave like something that does work.

Though it could be we misunderstood the scene (and maybe the animators did as well). It kind of makes sense as a weighted object plus parachute. I mean, if the jutsu connects even for a second, Shikamaru just needs to hurry and have Temari step forward to get into "normal" range... and as he steps forward at the same time, that should actually be pretty fast (especially in game turns).

"You can only advance once square while maintaining this jutsu at your current Level."

"...and my target copies my actions, so if I walk towards her, she walks towards me. Even if I immediately lose the extra range from my good roll and my kunai-achute, she'll be just inside my normal range."

Edit: Appropriately enough, Ninja'd by two other readers. XD

Because it's acting as a parachute, not a balloon? I mean, it would probably still fall pretty fast, but we don't know how high up he threw it. Ninja are pretty strong. Even with that low a surface area it would certainly fall *slower*, and shikamaru is supposed to be such a genius that he could easily time the moment it would create a shadow to match his attack, even if the shadow would only last a few moments before the knifechute hit the ground.

yup, the manga makes it more clear that it was a parachute that he threw when he was distracting Temari with the throwing stars

It's actually quite simple. Shikamaru can do a simply fire jutsu to heat the air in the balloon making it less dense. Then, it stays up for a short period.
