In a fight scene, it's kind of a toss-up whether I write the script and find screencaps to match, or get the screencaps I want and write out a script. It's a mood thing. I know my story, it's just the question of how to best communicate it.

I think in most systems, a nat 20 equals an auto hit regardless of AC. Pathfinder requires a crit confirm after a nat 20, where you roll again and if you clear AC you do crit damage, but if you fail you do normal damage. IIRC, a nat 20 in 5e is an auto hit and a crit, period.

It would be very strange for there to be a system where a natural 20 would not at least be an auto hit, as at that point there's just no point continuing the combat.

The Werefrog had a bad DM once who wouldn't allow a hit on his baron von badass even with a natural 20. He simply said it didn't beat the AC.

The Werefrog don't play with him at all anymore.

That's fair enough (it would be one thing if the DM had discussed this as a houserule with the players before the game but I'm guessing it was because the Baron was a pet NPC in this case?). Mind you, even if it was discussed with the players, it is a strange rule considering how it would potentially make people with high AC immune to non-magical sources of harm.
