The party does everything, obviously. Which is why new characters have to do a lot to ingratiate themselves into the group. Otherwise, they may not have a good reason to wake you up when things start happening.

Usually, the only characters that have to prove themselves useful are NPC's. Player characters usually get a free pass, because its just you guys versus the DM in an epic war to see who gets pissed off first.

The only players I have met who had to are 'THAT guy'. You know, the guy.

And if you don't know THAT guy, then... I'm sorry for your friends.

Eh. My group's had a few occasions where somebody's new character had to run solo for a few sessions because no one's character in the group had any motivation to allow some random new guy into the group until the DM could arrange a way to change that.

I tend be that guy on occasion, not because I'm trying to be a jerk, but because I try to encourage roleplaying from the other players. Of all the people in the bar, you go up and talk to the one with his hood up. Why?

I also like to make the DM work for it a little bit and get the other players to help him just to test all their problem-solving skills. In our first session for one campaign, my guy was going to walk to the next village, but then the other characters invited me to join up with the caravan, which was leaving tomorrow. Well, nobody bothered to tell me that the caravan would be taking a boat overseas, so I had just borrowed a horse and was on my way out of town when the DM finally got the other players to notice I wasn't there and go get me.

It's interesting how playing online versus playing in person changes things. In person, everyone knows right away you're another player, and acts accordingly. Online, though... The GM could always run interference, and act like it's another NPC until players agree to letting the person join.

I haven't run into a game like that yet, but it would be an interesting idea to implement. Especially if people playing built their characters separately, so they don't know who in the group is another player, and who's NPC
