I have a lot of questions about what it means to be a summon animal in the Naruto universe, like if something about the bond with humans is what gave them the power of speech.

Also, are the animals better ninjas, given they can teleport as easily as Minato? Reverse summon is a thing...

Apparently anything that can use chakra can use it to become smart enough to talk, and anything can agree to be summoned on demand. The summoned animals are just random critters who became ninja because reasons.

Never did get an explanation of the difference between Akamaru and Kakashi's summon dogs. It's almost redundant, why even teach ninja dogs when you can form a contract with a Dog summon?

Huh. I'm not sure, maybe they're trying to save on the chakra cost to summon the dog? Presumably there's a reason people don't just have their summons summoned at all times, but I dunno how naruto magic works well enough to say why. But a real dog will be with you all the time, able to warn you about ambushes or something?

The status of summon animals vis a vis reality has conflicting evidence between manga and anime. In the manga, the toad's mountain was a physical place in the world, months away from Konoha.

Ascribing some special status or realm to summon animals in comparison to ninja animals is pretty much a fanon thing, unless that shit was actually in the anime, I don't know.

In my headcanon, Kakashi's mom was an Inuazuka and his dogs are just at his house most of the time. And he pays genin to take care of them when he's not around, or leaves them at the Inuazuka kennels or whatever. The fact that he summons them is basically just him doing a normal ninja thing and summoning his intelligent animal companions and not being a weirdo like those Inuazuka.

The Werefrog always thought the summon dogs were a different kind of dog. That's what enabled the speech. The toads spoke before any contract, and they didn't all know much ninjutsu to be summoned. This is evidenced by the tadpoles Naruto summons.

However, it could be that speech comes with sage jutsu training. Akamaru never did that, but all the toads are able to do it. These dogs could probably also use sage jutsu, but they never had a reason good enough to stay still to build up the power first.

Well, it's actually based on the individual. Kiba's mother's dog was able to speak, Kiba might just not be a high enough level for Akamaru to speak as of yet. As for the benefits of each, Summoning jutsu requires a fair bit of chakra, and they can't stay indefinitely. Eventually they return to their homes. Ninja Animals, on the other hand, are there indefinitely, so they can be training partners, they develop a closer bond with the partner, etc. From a logistics point of view, a summoned animal isn't making the party bigger, and easier to spot, because they aren't there until needed. A ninja animal, on the other hand, either has to be allowed to hunt, or have food carried along for them. Either way, they are more likely to be seen, though they can also be an extra pair of eyes to spot enemies.
