Various cultural and mythological references being thrown around haphazardly here. But that's just the Naruto way.

It serves as a reminder that you're watching a Japanese show for Japanese kids: stuff they'd know that we're all "Huh?" I guess it is a bit like us tossing in Excaliber into a story.

Or not, as I'm just guessing and posting off the top of my head. XP Also, my comment reads odd to myself, since I usually watch subbed... yet it still takes this to remind me "Right... not the intended audience." XD

Given how often Excalibur references pops up in Japanese media, I'd say there's a good chance they'd still get the reference.

Better examples would probably be Durendal, Joyeuse, Clarent, or Arondight, though admittedly most westerners (or at least most Americans) likely also wouldn't know the full cultural background behind those names.

My focus was on a legendary weapon well-known in the western world that it can pop up in your typical action show with little to no introduction. I was not trying to find an equivalent to the weapons presented in the above comic strip (or actual episode of Naruto).

I can see how you came to that conclusion, though, and am sorry I was unclear. For the record, I don't think I am familiar with any of the weapons you just listed, though the Durendal sounds vaguely familiar.
