I admit I have a tendency to just go in with attacks and damage and not worry about buffs. Not just in D&D, but Pokemon, fighting games, card games, just about everything.

Some advice: don't be like me.

You don't need a buff if you make sure they never get a turn.

In TCG's, they can be vital. Well, in a lot of games, really... but outside of TCG's, I don't tend to use them, or at least, I don't use them well. Either I go overboard and use too many, or I forget and use hardly any. Both can result it big losses, and even if they win, there's usually a drawback. Take the excessive buffs in a JRPG. Sure, I might get a rhythm down and be unstoppable... but I've spent too much MP or GP or Items or whatever in addition to all that time!

Though the games where they matter most seem to be stuff like MMORPG's and tabletop RPG's. Especially if one character can enhance others to the point that their "lost" attack (or other action) couldn't contribute as much as their buffs have through piggybacking off the actions of others.
