in 3.5 a lv 20 fighter with shock trooper can gain an additonal 800+ damage per round by ditching defenses.

Sometimes the best defense is a good offense. In the real-world, there are sometimes techniques or tactics that do indeed sacrifice one's defenses or relative safety to improve one's ability to deal damage.

I know it can be tedious, but one of those things that makes me a GURPS fanboy are some of its fundamental combat options: All-Out Attack and All-Out Defense. Ignoring system differences so I don't have to explain them, you have your normal options which let you balance attacking and defending, or you can sacrifice your active defenses to vastly improve your offense or your active offense in order to seriously beef up your defenses.

In answer to the Author's question...Statistically, it depends on the circumstances. In practice, I often see players give up their defenses for offense and almost never see the alternative (even though the alternative is always available and the first usually costs room in the character's build.)
