Y'know, it's sort of interesting how rare these sort of, powerful abilities with a drawback that might kill you are in dnd. I guess barbarian rage is sort of that way with how it leaves you weak and tired afterwards, but it's pretty long lasting and not something that comes up much. I guess frenzied berserker would be more in line with it with the whole, can go infinitely low hit points until it stops raging and instantly dies. But yeah, I can't think of a lot of like, "Turbo charge your spell in exchange for rolling a save against death immediately afterwards" abilities.

When you really think about it...it is more unusual that techniques with potentially fatal drawbacks are as common in shonen anime. If they have fatal drawbacks, how did you ever train in them? How did you develop the technique without killing yourself? How do you demonstrate/teach it to the next generation?

That's... a good point. How did people learn how to open the eighth gate? Unless someone opened it and then explained it before dying. And how many people had to open it before people realized, "Oh, this automatically kills you, and it's not just because you were probably in the middle of a super badass fight."

DnD 5e evocation wizards have an ability that lets them automatically roll max damage, but if they use it more than once per day, they take 2d12 damage per spell level. Given their hit die is a d6, that's a fair chunk regardless of what you're casting.
